occupation

Heimebane (international title: Home Ground , German: Heimspielstätte ) is a Norwegian television series that was broadcast in two seasons on NRK1 from 2018 to 2019 . The series is about Helena Mikkelsen, the fictional first female soccer coach in the Norwegian men's soccer league and the events around her soccer club Varg IL.

action

First season

At the beginning of the first season, the newly promoted to the first division and financially troubled football club Varg IL loses its coach because he had a stroke. That's why the successful women's soccer coach Helena Mikkelsen gets the chance to take over the club from Ulsteinvik . But she has to fight against the former international professional and player of the club Michael Ellingsen, who now wants to start a career as a coach. She received the post and subsequently had to deal with sexist hostility from fans, the media and the club.

Mikkelsen is sexually harassed by an opposing coach before a game . After the two had a physical argument, she was banished to the stands for four games as a punishment. With the support of Espen Eide, managing director of Varg IL, she goes public with her story and her sentence is lifted. Because of an injury to striker Ellingsen, the club has to buy a new striker. Due to the financial difficulties they have to sell Eivind Brattskjær, the team's most popular player, against his will. At the end of the season, the team successfully played against relegation, but the main sponsor announced that it would not let any more money flow into the club.

Second season

The second season starts at the beginning of the next season, in which the financial situation for Varg IL is still tense. As a result, the team now consists of many young, low-paid football players. Espen Eide tries to find a new sponsor to secure the club. Instead, after a lengthy discussion, the siblings Petronella and Peder Nagelsmidt join the club as investors, which means that Peder Nagelsmidt has an increasing influence on what happens in the club. Vargs star player Adrian Austnes meanwhile gets the chance to play for the Norwegian national team, which coach Mikkelsen prevents by reporting on his injury in her role as television commentator. Meanwhile, the Varg IL players are discussing whether CEO Eide is homosexual, which he denies.

After Austnes was not used in the international game, his relationship with Helena Mikkelsen deteriorates and he expresses the desire to move to Rosenborg . When he boycotted training, the club let him go. At the end of the season, Varg IL is in the cup final against Rosenborg. They can win the final after Austnes, among others, deliberately misses a penalty as he continues to feel connected to his former club. At the end of the game, Vargs goalkeeper Kasper Fleten announced in an interview that he was in a relationship with a man, which caused Eide to burst into tears at home in front of the television. The season ends with Mikkelsen giving up her job as a trainer and indicating to Eide that she wants to become national trainer.

reception

The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang awarded both seasons five out of six points. The second season, however, would be missing the common thread. The Dagbladet also awarded both seasons five out of six possible points. Marie Kleve criticized the caricature representation of the Nagelsmidt couple as well as the predictability in the second season and the too great predictability at the beginning of the first season.

The series received a lot of attention because it took up current social issues such as women and homosexuality in football or MeToo . The critics Morten Ståle Nilsen and Leif Tore Lindø said that these topics were incorporated into the series in a rather subtle and less instructive way.

The series won the Gullruten television award in 2018 in five categories. Ane Dahl Torp was named best actress and Axel Bøyum named best male actress. The series itself won the “Best Drama Series” category. The series was also able to win the specialist awards for the best screenplay (Johan Fasting) and the best sound production. The following year, the series won the specialist categories for Best Clip in TV Drama, Best Graphic Design, Best Music and Innovation of the Year. In 2018, the series was also voted Scandinavia's best drama series.

production

The first season was filmed from March to October 2017. Filming for the second season began in spring 2018. The exterior shots were produced in Ulsteinvik , the interior shots in Oslo .

Charisma

The first season was first broadcast on the Norwegian broadcaster NRK1 from March 4 to April 29, 2018. The second season followed from February 17 to April 7, 2019. In September 2019 Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK) announced that no third season of the series would be produced. The production company Motlys then said it might be filming another season through another collaboration. The series was also broadcast on Danish radio Danmarks Radio (DR).

Initially, the series was planned in Norway as Hjemmebane , which is the Bokmål version of Heimebane . However, since the series takes place in Ulsteinvik , an area in which Nynorsk is the predominant written language, the title was changed to Heimebane . The series is marketed internationally with the English translation Home Ground .

The first two episodes were shown at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival .
