Heiner Zieschang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heiner Zieschang (born November 12, 1936 in Kiel , † April 5, 2004 in Bochum ) was a German mathematician who dealt in particular with knot theory .

Life

Zieschang studied from 1956 to 1961 in Hamburg and Göttingen. In 1961 he received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen under Kurt Reidemeister ( about simple curves on pretzels ). He headed the chair for topology at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1968 until his retirement in 2002. He was the youngest professor in Germany at the time and was one of the founding fathers of the faculty for mathematics in Bochum. Zieshang's scientific work includes work on low-dimensional topology, knot theory and combinatorial group theory . For his achievements, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Toulouse 3 in 1996 and the title of Honorary Professor from Lomonosov University in 1997 . He was also involved in the establishment and work of the Russian-German Institute for Culture and Science at Moscow University. In 1993 he was awarded the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize .

Zieschang was a member of the collective of authors Boto von Querenburg , under whose name the standard work "Set Theoretical Topology" was published.
