Heinrich-Wolfgang Leopoldt (born August 22, 1927 in Schwerin ; † July 28, 2011 in Unterlüß ) was a German mathematician who dealt with algebraic number theory. He was considered one of the leading international number theorists.

Life

Leopoldt received his doctorate in 1954 from the University of Hamburg under Helmut Hasse . From 1956 to 1958 he was a post-doc at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (New Jersey; USA). In 1959 he completed his habilitation at the University of Erlangen and then went to the University of Tübingen . From 1964 he was a full professor at the University of Karlsruhe , where he also became director of the Mathematical Institute.

Leopoldt's investigations with Tomio Kubota on the p-adic L-functions for Dirichlet series that they introduced and named after them are a fundamental building block of the Iwasawa theory . Leopoldt proved a p-adic class number formula for the p-adic L-functions for a totally real Abelian number field. It connects the values of the L-function at point 1 with arithmetic properties of the number fields (class number, p-adic regulator, discriminant). For Abelian number fields, the non-disappearance at point 1 can be proven from the non-disappearance of the p-adic regulator. A conjecture by Leopoldt, which has not yet been proven, states that the p-adic regulator does not disappear for all algebraic number fields .

Together with Hans Zassenhaus , he also dealt with computer algebra and its application in number theory. Leopoldt and Peter Roquette published the collected works of his teacher Hasse (De Gruyter 1975). In 1979 he became a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Werner Blum, Hans-Peter Rehm , Heinrich Matzat and Claus-Günther Schmidt were among his doctoral students .
