biography

Heinrich Adamy grew up as the eldest of seven siblings as the son of the businessman Heinrich Daniel Adamy (1778–1833) and Dorothea geb. Beierlein (1787–1847) in a state hat. After graduating from high school in his hometown, Adamy began to study geography in the neighboring town of Hirschberg . He began his teaching career on October 26, 1834 as an assistant teacher at the Protestant city school in Schweidnitz . Still at Easter 1835 he gave up that position and began as a private teacher to teach the sons of the then incumbent President of the Province of Poznan Eduard von Flottwell in the city of Poznan ; later Adamy taught there as a teacher at the Royal Louis School for boys. In 1841 he returned to his hometown, where he taught for two years at a high school for boys with private status. From 1843 to 1844 Heinrich was the headmaster of a private school for boys. From 1844 he worked for 40 years until his retirement as a teacher at an elite royal high school in the Silesian provincial capital of Wroclaw.

Adamy was married to Margaretha Glock, who died after 11 months of marriage - no children from this marriage are known. His great-great-nephew was Reinhard Stewig , who also worked as a geographer and author .

In addition to his work as a teacher, Adamy became particularly acquainted with his books on Silesian geography, topography and history. One of his best-known books is The Silesian Place Names, Their Origin and Meaning - A Picture from Prehistory. He was the first in history who devoted himself to the etymology of the Silesian place names.

From 1860 Adamy was an active member of the Association for the History and Antiquity of Silesia .
