Heinrich August Dietrich

Heinrich August Dietrich (* 4. November 1820 in Zwenkau , † December 9 . Jul / 21st December  1897 greg. In Tallinn ) was in the Baltic States operating German botanist and landscape gardener. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ HADietr. "

Life

Adam Heinrich August Dietrich was born not far from Leipzig . Between 1848 and 1857 Dietrich was employed as a landscape gardener and garden supervisor at the Baltic German estate of Haimre (German Heimar ) in the then Russian province of Estonia . Dietrich created a spacious park in the English style there . The park of Haimre is still one of the attractions of the region today. Dietrich also planted the orchard in the Kunda estate .

After his time in Haimre, Dietrich stayed for six months to study in the library and in the herbarium of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

He then lived as the owner of a tree nursery and garden shop in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( Reval ). Dietrich introduced numerous new crops to Estonia. In Tallinn he was one of the founders of the "Estonian Horticultural Association" and in 1862 its secretary. Before his death, Dietrich was made an honorary citizen of the Estonian capital.

Scientific achievement

Heinrich August Dietrich is considered one of the pioneers of mycology in the Baltic States . In addition, he dealt intensively with lichenology and phycology . The cryptogamic research of the occasional scientist is considered to be groundbreaking, especially his work Insight into the cryptogam world of the Baltic provinces . Dietrich also wrote expert and precise lists of species of the native flora in 1854 and 1865.
