Heinrich Bregulla

Heinrich Bregulla (born July 11, 1930 in Berlin ; † December 15, 2013 there ) was a German ornithologist and conservationist. His research focus was the birds (especially parrots) of the South Seas .

Life

Bregulla was a trained electrical engineer. In 1958 he moved to the New Hebrides . Until 1980, he explored the avifaunae New Caledonia , Vanuatu , the Fiji - and Tonga Islands, the Solomon Islands and the Philippines . He was particularly interested in the ecology and behavior of the local parrots and parrot maddins . Bregulla was particularly committed to the breeding of rare birds of the Pacific in human care. In 1962 he made it possible to re -import the New Caledonian kagus into several European zoological gardens (including Berlin) and in the 1970s he succeeded in importing various parrot finches and parrots (including the Apolori ) to Europe for the first time . Thanks to the exchange, the breeding of rare parrots from the Pacific region was also successful in Germany, Switzerland and France. Bregulla wrote numerous articles on the birdlife of the Pacific, including The Aviary and Feathered World . In 1972 the monograph of the genus Erythrura Swainson was published in collaboration with the Swiss zoologist Vinzenz Ziswiler , 1837: (Aves, Passeres, Estrildidae) . In 1992 he published the monograph The Birds of Vanuatu . In December 2013 Bregulla died after a long illness.

Dedication names and awards

In 1964, Heinz Felten named the Fijian bulldog bat ( Chaerephon bregullae synonym: Tadarida jobensis bregullae ) in honor of Heinrich Bregulla. In 1998 he was awarded the Elfriede Steinbacher Prize by the magazine Gefiederte Welt . In 2001 in Schwetzingen he received the Tropical Ornithology Prize from the Society for Tropical Ornithology (GTO) for his series of articles "Die Tauben Neukaledoniens" in the journal Die Aviere .
