Heinrich Christoph Gottlieb Breling (born October 14, 1849 in Burgdorf ; † September 6, 1914 in Fischerhude ) was a German genre and history painter and co-founder of the Fischerhude artists' colony .

Life

Heinrich Breling spent his childhood in Fischerhude as the son of the border guard in Wilhelmshaus. From 1863 to 1869 he studied at the technical center in Hanover . From 1872 he was a student of Wilhelm von Diez in Munich. In 1883 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . From 1884 Heinrich Breling was court painter to King Ludwig II of Bavaria and painted several watercolors of King Ludwig II and his residences, and was also involved in decorating the Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof palaces. In 1892 Heinrich Breling settled with his wife Amalie, b. Mayer (1856–1933) and the six daughters finally moved to Fischerhude.

In 1908 he had his new studio built in Bredenau ( Ottersberg ), which was still used by his grandson Tim and his granddaughter Mietje (children of son-in-law Jan Bontjes van Beek and daughter Olga Bontjes van Beek ). His granddaughter from the same marriage, Cato Bontjes van Beek , was executed by guillotine on August 5, 1943 in Berlin-Plötzensee as a member of the Red Band known by the National Socialists' radio defenses . His second oldest daughter, Louise Modersohn-Breling (1883–1950), was married to the German landscape painter Otto Modersohn (1865–1943). His grandson from this marriage is the painter Christian Modersohn . His daughter Amelie Breling (1876–1966) became a teacher in Hanover, painter, sculptor and ceramicist; with her brother-in-law Jan Bontjes van Beek she founded Fischerhuder Kunstkeramik in 1922 .

Heinrich Breling became known as a genre and history painter, and depictions of wars and battles were an important subject. His later work, which approached Impressionism , went largely unnoticed. He died at the age of 64 and was buried in the Fischerhude cemetery (Verden district). The birthday of December 14, 1849 is given on Breling's tombstone. Other sources cite October 14, 1849.
