Heinrich Engelen ( Henricus Ellens ) (* after 1460 in Ellenz-Poltersdorf ; † October 24, 1523 in Houthem Netherlands ) was a German clergyman , Premonstratensian , prior in Niederehe and provost in St. Gerlach.

Life

Nothing has been handed down about Heinrich's youth and school education. It is believed that as a young man he entered the Premonstratensian convent of the Steinfeld monastery , which at that time owned rich estates in Ellenz-Poltersdorf. Between 3 August 1501 and in 1504 he was professed - canons , rector and owner of patronage parish Schleiden . After the reconstruction of the Niederehe monastery and its conversion into a male monastery by Count Diedrich IV of Manderscheid-Schleiden , Heinrich Engelen was appointed first prior in 1504 . From February 15 and March 5, 1505, he was also appointed pastor of Niederehe , the reconciliation of the church and altars took place on August 22, 1505. In 1513, he acted as an agent for orphaned relatives in the sale of vineyards to his abbey on.

Engelen knew how to let monastery life flourish again and enjoyed the reputation of Count v. Manderscheid and the Steinfeld abbots. In 1516 he was asked by Abbot Gottfried II von Steinfeld for support in his visitation and reform of the aristocratic Premonstratensian Monastery of St. Gerlach in Houthem near Maastricht . Engelen complied with the request for the reintroduction and long-term security of the simple monastery life and was elected a short time later as provost. Efforts by the local aristocratic party to bring the monastery under their control and to oppose the monastery reform carried out by him, he was able to successfully fend off.

A personal letter of protection , which he had issued for this purpose by Emperor Charles V in 1522, was helpful in this situation . He was unable to complete his reforms, however, as he had died in 1523 under unexplained circumstances in St. Gerlach in Houthem.
