Life

Heinrich Haller studied zoology , botany and geography at the University of Bern and obtained a licentiate in natural sciences in 1978 . In 1982 he did his doctorate in Bern with Prof. Urs Glutz von Blotzheim with the dissertation "Spatial organization and dynamics of a population of the golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos in the Central Alps". In 1991 he completed his habilitation in the forest science department of the University of Göttingen with the habilitation thesis "On the ecology of the lynx Lynx lynx in the course of its resettlement in the Valais Alps". Haller then offered courses on the subject of mountain ecology in Göttingen for 20 years, first as a private lecturer and from 1998 as an adjunct professor. Haller's full-time job was the curator of the St. Gallen Nature Museum from 1993 to 1996 and director of the Swiss National Park from 1996 to 2019 .

As a scientist, Heinrich Haller dealt in advance with studies on local predatory predators . In the golden eagle he discovered effects of population regulation triggered by density stress, in the lynx he carried out pioneering work with Urs Breitenmoser on the knowledge of the biology of this species, which was resettled in the Alpine region. A later focus was on a documentation on the subject of poaching in the border area Switzerland-Italy-Austria.

Haller's tenure as director of the Swiss National Park included the integration of the Macun Lake District (2000), the establishment of a new National Park Center in Zernez (2008) and the centenary of the National Park (2014) with the publication of the “Atlas of the Swiss National Park” a year earlier.

Heinrich Haller is married and has three children. Ursina Haller and Christian Haller  are former professional snowboarders.
