Henry III. (Mecklenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich III., Duke of Mecklenburg , called the Hanger (* around 1337; † April 24, 1383 in Schwerin ) was the ruling duke in Mecklenburg from 1379 until his death .

Life

Heinrich (III.) Was the first son of the Mecklenburg Duke Albrechts II and his wife Eufemia , who was a sister of the Swedish King Magnus Eriksson . In his first marriage from 1362 he was married to Ingeborg of Denmark, daughter of Waldemar IV of Denmark , and had four children with her:

On February 26, 1377, the duke entered into a second marriage with Mechthild von Werle-Waren , a daughter of Bernhard II von Werle . This connection remained childless.

He and his younger brother Magnus took over government affairs in the duchy together after the death of their father. Heinrich specialized in robbery in the country. Mostly at night he would seek out the disturbing troubles in their hiding spots and prefer to hang them on the nearest tree. In the end, this earned him the nickname "the trailer", which is certainly not flattering for a sovereign.

After an accident at a tournament in Wismar , Heinrich III died. at his castle in Schwerin and was buried in the Doberan Minster . Then his brother Magnus I briefly took over the government of the duchy together with Heinrich's son Albrecht IV until 1384.
