In the province of Overijssel in the Kingdom of the Netherlands born Hendrikus Joannis Sinkel studied at the Dusseldorf Art Academy under the Nazarene Karl Müller (1818-1893) from Ahrweiler, who was a professor of history painting at the Dusseldorf Art Academy since 1857, and Franz Ittenbach to whose best students he belonged to.

Sinkel worked in Almelo until 1861, made a study trip to Italy in 1867 and then lived in Weert until 1871 . He moved to Deventer , where he married Cathrina Agnes née Blom (born January 14, 1843 in Zwolle; † February 10, 1913 in Düsseldorf) in 1871, and then settled in Düsseldorf from 1874 , where he lived until his death.

Under the influence of his teachers, Sinkel initially painted religious pictures in the strict Nazarene style, especially pictures of the Madonna. Later portraits were part of his repertoire. He became a sought-after painter of portraits. He had exhibitions in Zwolle in 1855, in Ghent in 1874 and in 1880 at the General German Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf with portraits of the Count and Countess von Spee.

Sinkel was a member of the Malkasten artists' association . He bought a house at Oststrasse 34 from the painter Karl Hoff after he was called to Karlsruhe in 1878.
