Heinrich Kurz (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Kurz (born December 7, 1943 in Pennewang ; † March 12, 2016 in Aachen ) was an Austrian physicist who dealt with semiconductor physics , nanotechnology , femtosecond spectroscopy , terahertz radiation applications and optoelectronics .

Life

Kurz came from a farming family and studied physics and mathematics at the University of Vienna from 1962 onwards, graduating in physics in 1968. At the new atomic institute of the Austrian universities, he worked on his dissertation, diffraction of thermal neutrons on optical line gratings , from 1966–1970 , with which he received his doctorate in 1971 . He then worked at the Philips research laboratory in Hamburg until 1981 , where he worked on optical storage materials. From 1981 to 1984 he was a Research Associate at Harvard University with Nicolaas Bloembergen on a Feodor Lynen Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation , where he researched time-resolved optical investigations of highly excited states in semiconductors. In 1983 he completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg and in 1984 became professor at RWTH Aachen University and head of the laboratory for femtosecond spectroscopy on semiconductors . In 1987 he received the Alfried Krupp Prize for Young University Professors . Since 1990 he has held the chair for semiconductor technology at RWTH Aachen. Since 1997 he has been director of the Advanced Micro and Optoelectronic Center Aachen (AMICA). In 2011 Kurz retired .

Since 1993 he has been managing director of the Society for Applied Micro- and Optoelectronics (AMO GmbH) in Aachen. Since 2005 he has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
