Heinrich LXIV. (Reuss-Köstritz)
Heinrich LXIV. Reuss (born March 31, 1787 in Köstritz , † September 15, 1856 in Ernstbrunn ) was Prince Reuss of Köstritz .
Life
Heinrich LXIV. was the younger son of Prince Heinrich XLIII. Reuss zu Köstritz (older branch) and his wife Countess Luise Reuss zu Ebersdorf. He followed his father in 1814 after his older brother Heinrich LXI. Fallen in 1813 as the 4th paragiarist .
After Heinrich had finished his studies at the University of Jena and then prepared himself for the military class, he joined the Imperial Austrian Army on April 28, 1804, where he was a subordinate in Infantry Regiment No. 47 (Count Kinsky) . In November 1804 he was transferred to the Blankenstein Hussar Regiment as Rittmeister, with which he took part in the 1805 campaign to Germany
With the beginning of the campaign of 1809 he was transferred to the great general staff and assigned to the generalissimo Archduke Karl as a wing adjutant while being promoted to major . He fought in the battle of Aspern , where he led the Reuss-Plauen regiment to attack Aspern on the right flank of this place. He lost his horse, led the troops on foot, and after hours of bitter struggle, the troops with the Vogelsang and Rainer regiments conquered the place and held it against all further attacks. He received the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order for his services to the House of Austria . He fought in the battle of Wagram and played a not insignificant role in bringing about the Znojmo armistice .
After Archduke Karl lost the supreme command, Heinrich left the Austrian army as a lieutenant colonel. He went to England and continued fighting against Napoleon . As a lieutenant colonel, he was given command of a hunter battalion in the King's German Legion . He fought in Spain under Wellington and followed the duke to France. When his father Heinrich XLIII. Died September 22nd, 1814, he followed him and represented Reuss-Köstritz at the Congress of Vienna . After Napoleon's return from Elba, the prince rejoined the imperial army, as a lieutenant colonel in the 11th Infantry Regiment (Archduke Rainer). In the summer campaign of 1815 he only took part in the siege of Hüningen and then went with his regiment to the camp of Dijon. The prince later became a colonel in the 6th Hussar Regiment, which he commanded for 11 years. There he was promoted to major general.
Prince Heinrich LXIV. became a field marshal lieutenant and owner of the 7th Hussar Regiment in 1836 . In this rank he became a commanding general , first in Slavonia and Syrmia, later in Moravia and Silesia. On December 1, 1848, he retired as general of the cavalry . He then lived in seclusion at his Ernstbrunn Palace from the property of the Prince of Sinzendorf , which he had inherited in 1828.
With his older brother, who fought on the side of Napoleon, he had agreed to only take over commands far apart, so that both would never face each other as enemies in the field.
Heinrich LXIV. died unmarried in 1856. His cousin Heinrich LXIX followed him as Prince Reuss zu Köstritz (older branch) .
