After attending grammar school, he studied philosophy in Greifswald and Berlin from 1928; while in Berlin, he attended evening courses in painting and graphics at the Berlin-Charlottenburg School of Applied Arts with Max Kaus . On his advice, studies at the State Art Academy in Berlin with Bernhard Hasler , Willy Jaeckel , Philipp Franck and Heinrich Reifferscheidt followed . In 1932 Lietz passed the first state examination as a teacher. After completing his legal traineeship and passing the 2nd state examination, he worked as an art teacher in various cities until 1939 (in 1943 appointed to the faculty). From 1946 he was a member of the Kulturbund for the Democratic Renewal of Germany and in 1952 he joined the Association of Visual Artists . In addition to his freelance work, Lietz was the leader of folk art circles of the Kulturbund and the adult education centers .
