Heinrich Möller (born June 5, 1841 in Milte ; † February 5, 1932 in Berlin ) was a German veterinarian who developed surgical techniques on pets and horses .

Life

Möller was born as the first of eight children to the businessman and farmer Heinrich Möller and his wife Elisabeth, née Schulze zur Hörst. The Milter village pastor gave him additional lessons in preparation for his admission to the Warendorfer grammar school.

After graduating from high school , Möller worked for half a year in the village smithy owned by his uncle; In the fall of 1861 he enrolled as a student at the then military horse doctor school in Berlin in the veterinary school there. He passed the final technical examination with "very good"; associated with this was the license to practice medicine, 1st class. After working as a horse doctor in the Prussian army in Paderborn and Münster , he became a district veterinarian at the age of 27 and was appointed stage manager at the military medical school in Berlin in 1869 . With the work "About the development of the hooves" he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD at the University of Rostock . In 1873 he changed from military service as a teacher of veterinary medicine at the Agricultural Academy in Proskau . In 1876 he was appointed to teach at the Royal Veterinary School in Berlin (from 1887 Veterinary College ). At the same time he was appointed to the technical deputation for veterinary affairs. In the following year he received a call to the examination committee for civil servants. In 1881 he received a professorship and in 1885 became the first director of the independent surgical veterinary clinic.

The diagnostic methods and surgical techniques developed by Möller on pets and horses made him and the clinic internationally known. The distinction between slope and support leg lameness in horses goes back to Möller . His experiments in the surgical treatment of arytenoid cartilage for the therapy of laryngeal whistling in horses attracted attention ; He also developed surgical procedures for treating ossified ankle joints in horses.

Möller was a member of various academic professional associations including the Berlin Veterinary Society and, due to his international reputation, an honorary member of the veterinary associations in Hungary, the USA and Great Britain.

Möller was the son-in-law of the important Freemason Hermann Settegast and between 1900 and 1925 Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Hamburg in Berlin.

He was buried in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
