Rudolf Disselhorst (before 1918)

Rudolf Disselhorst (born January 4, 1854 in Rinteln , Weser; † January 28, 1930 in Halle , Saale) was a German doctor, veterinarian and university professor.

Live and act

Disselhorst was born the son of Adam Heinrich Disselhorst (* 1819), the Rinteln brewer and innkeeper of the "Löwen", and his wife Louise (* 1824), daughter of the painter Edmund König in Hanover . He attended high school in his hometown, which he had to leave after three years. He was expelled because his behavior was considered unworthy of a high school student, his performance had been poor in all subjects, and he had been noticed for his extraordinary laziness. Therefore, he first completed an apprenticeship as a brewer in Holzminden and Höxter , worked as a brewing assistant and made a career as manager of the brewery in Höxter, where he had completed his apprenticeship, at a young age, after which he headed the Falkenkrug brewery in Detmold .

His father did not think the decision to go to university was a good idea, but supported him with a small initial loan (1,500 marks). At the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover, he initially applied for and received admission as a guest auditor, with the condition that he should present the Obersekunda certificate within a year, which he succeeded in self-study (German, Latin, mathematics). After completing his military service as a one-year volunteer with the artillery, he continued his studies in veterinary medicine , which he financed with a small paternal inheritance as well as violin and singing lessons. In 1881 he passed the veterinary state examination and passed the district veterinarian examination. However, he only ran his own practice for a short time, as he took up a position as an assistant at the veterinary medical institute of the Agricultural Institute of the University of Halle in the same year .

After a few years as a lecturer, he decided to study human medicine. After another intensive self-study, he passed the Abitur that he lacked in 1885 as an external student at the Latina of the Francke Foundations in Halle . He gave up his university position in 1886 for his medical studies, during the course of which he stood out for his outstanding achievements and was awarded a doctorate in 1887 with an experimental work on the diffusion of blood cells ( studies on emigration ). med. received his doctorate . Shortly afterwards he got a job as a prosector at the anatomical institute of the veterinary school in Berlin .

After only a year he had to leave this school again because he should have insulted his students inappropriately for "their stupidity". He then continued his medical studies in Halle, Rostock and Göttingen , where he also acted as a tutor in an assistant position at the Georg-August University . In 1893 he passed the medical state examination and qualified as a professor at the University of Tübingen for comparative anatomy and pathology . In 1897 he obtained his doctorate there. rer. nat. with the treatise The accessory sex glands of vertebrates - a comparative anatomical study .

When Julius Kühn received funding to expand the University's Agricultural Institute in Halle and wanted to expand the anatomical-physiological department, he offered Disselhorst the position of department head, which he accepted. In 1898 Kühn then successfully appointed him associate professor for the anatomy and physiology of domestic mammals . In 1909 Disselhorst was also appointed full professor .

Disselhorst, who was now described as a tireless researcher and university teacher, as a man of the greatest circumspection and objectivity of judgment, was considered an excellent advisor to the university. He quickly expanded his department and the veterinary clinic. He has written widely published books on the anatomy and physiology of domestic animals, a handbook of equine science and an extremely successful guide to meat inspection. The agricultural institutes of the University of Halle owe a large part of their far-reaching reputation to Disselhorst's work.

Even after his retirement in 1924 Disselhorst remained scientifically active. His diverse interests, which went beyond the scope of his specialist field, gave rise to several studies on philosophical and art-historical topics, some of which he also published.

From 1888 Rudolf Disselhorst was married to the daughter of the manor Auguste Amalie Kuhlmann from Hagen (Bergen) .

Honors

Disselhorst was dean of his faculty . In 1905 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , whose secretary he was from 1928. He received the Order of the Red Eagle 4th class, the appointment to the Prussian government council and the title of a privy councilor .

Trivia

Disselhorst insisted on accepting the invitation of the grammar school in his hometown to visit the site of his early high school misunderstanding as the guest of honor of the 100th anniversary of the Ernestineum in Rinteln in 1921.
