Heinrich Pantaleon (born July 13, 1522 in Basel ; † March 3, 1595 ibid) was a Swiss doctor, university professor of dialectics and physics and late humanist , best known for his work Teutscher Nation warhaffte Helden , which includes around 1,700 résumés of well-known personalities.

Life

Heinrich Pantaleon, son of the Ravensburg tailor Christian Pantlin, studied theology in Heidelberg and Basel as well as medicine in Valence after a broken training as a printer . He then practiced as a doctor in Basel and Baden in Aargau . In 1556 he was professor of dialectics at the University of Basel , from 1557 of physics and from 1558 of medicine . He translated medical, historical and geographical works into German and edited humanistic writings, including by Erasmus von Rotterdam . He also published his own historical and medical works and also wrote a drama. His main work is the Prosopographia heroum atque illustrium virorum totius Germaniae , published in three volumes 1565–66 in Latin, 1567–70 in German under the title Teutscher Nation Heldenbuch and 1578 under the title Teutscher Nation warhaffte Helden . The plan was a comprehensive and new one: the whole of German history from prehistoric times was to be presented in the form of biographies. The first volume begins with Adam , the second with Charlemagne , the third with Maximilian I. The last volume registered the author's appointment as Poeta laureatus and Count of the Palatinate Court on the part of Emperor Maximilian II .

He also published alchemical works, reprinted in the Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa , as well as a balneological description of the city of Baden AG and its baths published in 1578 .

Pantaleon was a student and friend of Andreas Bodenstein . In his honor he wrote a funeral poem with the following words:

“En CAROLSTADIUS quem olim Franconia misit / Occidit, Helvetium Gloria, fama, decus.” Karlstadt, whom Franconia once sent, is dead, Swiss fame, honor and adornment.
