Heinrich Petry (born June 10, 1832 in Frankfurt am Main ; † October 3, 1904 there ) was a German sculptor and university lecturer.

Life

Heinrich Petry was a student of the famous sculptor Johann Nepomuk Zwerger at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main . Under Eduard Schmidt von der Launitz he worked on the Gutenberg monument from 1854 to 1857 . In 1866 Heinrich Petry himself became a teacher at the Städel Institute and took over the class of the sculpture department there.

Petry's main works are the monuments to Anton Kirchner and Sebastian Rinz in the ramparts as well as portrait busts of Edward von Steinle , Heinrich Adam Neeb and Johannes Janssen . During the reconstruction of Frankfurt Cathedral after the fire of 1867, he created the figures on the tower and on the north portal, and later he made groups of figures for the Neue Börse (1878) and the Frankfurt Opera House (1880). He created the statues of Lersner and Merian on the southern part of the New Town Hall , built in 1900, and an angel figure made of white marble for the crypt of the newspaper publisher Hermann Minjon (1838–1897) in the main cemetery .

Petry's grave is located in the Frankfurt Südfriedhof .
