Johann Heinrich Schilking (born November 25, 1815 in Warendorf , † October 2, 1895 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Schilking was born in Warendorf. When he was five years old, the family moved to Oelde , where he did an apprenticeship as a pharmacist. From 1835 to 1841 he trained at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Carl Friedrich Lessing . He attended Schirmer's landscape class from 1836 to 1840. He then used the years 1843/44 to study at the Antwerp Academy . In 1848 he was a founding member of the Malkasten Artists' Association in Düsseldorf. From 1851 to 1869 he lived in Braunschweig and worked as an illustrator for the Illustrirte Zeitung in Leipzig. In 1869 he moved to Oldenburg. There he was the drawing teacher of the Grand Duchess Elisabeth . On March 26, 1870, Peter II , the Grand Duke of Oldenburg , appointed him court painter. Schilking was the chairman of the Oldenburger Kunstverein from 1870 to 1878 . In 1881 he received the medal for services to art from his patron .

Heinrich Schilking died on October 2, 1895 in Düsseldorf.
