Heinrich Stephani (born April 1, 1761 in Gemünda , † December 25, 1850 in Gorka , Silesia ) was a German educator and reformer .

Life

Heinrich Stephani was the son of the Gemünda local pastor Georg Leonhard Adam Stephani. He grew up in Merzbach , where his father was transferred in 1765. He studied law at the University of Erlangen .

In his main occupation, Stephani was a Protestant theologian , church councilor and dean in Gunzenhausen . From 1808 he worked in the school inspectorate, then a member of the first Bavarian state parliament . He was a rationalist and was removed from office in 1834.

Stephani made it easier to learn to read by introducing the phonetic method instead of the spelling method that had been customary up to that time ( manual primer or elementary book for learning to read according to the phonetic method , 1802). In student history, he is considered to be the alleged originator of the chocolateist movement in Jena in 1791, which resulted in armed battles between students and soldiers and the move to Nohra .

He was married to the daughter of the clergyman and educator Johann Paul Pöhlmann .
