Prince Heinrich

Heinrich Wilhelm Konstantin Victor Franz Prince of Hesse (real prince and Landgrave of Hesse ; born October 30, 1927 in Rome ; † November 18, 1999 in Wolfsgarten Castle ) was a German painter and set designer who, as an artist, used his Italian name Enrico d ' Assia used.

Life

Enrico d'Assia was the son of Philip of Hesse and Princess Mafalda of Savoy , a daughter of King Victor Emanuel III. from Italy . The princess died in the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944 . Enrico d'Assia spent his early childhood in Rome. From 1933 he lived alternately in Kassel and Rome.

After graduating from high school in Bieberstein in 1946, Enrico d'Assia moved back to Italy. His romantic, playful painting style with surrealist elements developed at his places of work in Rome as well as on Ischia and Capri. From the 1960s onwards he worked increasingly as a designer of the stage sets for the operas in Rome and Florence and, in particular, at the Scala in Milan . In the Villa Necchi Campiglio , the so-called “prince's room” was always available to him. The so-called Prince Heinrich Gallery has existed in the Museum Schloss Fasanerie since 2009 , commemorating the painter, set designer and art collector Enrico d'Assia.

Individual evidence

  1. Since 1919, due to the abolition of the privileges of the nobility, no earlier birthright titles have been part of the civil name in Germany. According to information from the family archive of the Hessian House Foundation , the question of the name is as follows: "If you ask for the family name, it is 'Prince and Landgrave of Hesse' for all members of the House of Hesse since 1920" ". The Frankfurt am Main district court confirmed this name on December 22, 1956. “Landgraf” is part of the civil-legal name and not an outdated primogeneity title. And yet, to a certain extent, it is handled that way: by virtue of the fact that all other family members shorten their names to “Prince / essin of Hesse” in public appearances, and only the head of the house shortens his name to “Landgrave of Hesse”.
