Heinrich von Mayr (born February 22, 1806 in Nuremberg , † April 5, 1871 in Munich ) was a German genre and battle, especially horse painter; Portrait miniaturist and eraser.

At the age of four he lost his father, the painter and lacquer factory owner Johann Daniel von Mayr, and was raised by his stepfather, the landscape painter Friedrich Christian Fues (1772–1836), who gave him his first painting lessons.

Heinrich von Mayr studied at the Nuremberg Art School with Albert Christoph Reindel . He continued his studies in Munich from 1825 , where he attended the royal stables and the veterinary school, where he studied horse painting.

On behalf of the Prince of Thurn and Taxis, he created several large-format paintings with depictions of horses in 1832 and 1833. In 1838/39 he accompanied Duke Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria on his trip to Egypt, Nubia, Palestine, Syria and Malta. Then he was appointed ducal “cabinet painter”. From the sketches made during the trip, two magnificent works emerged, illustrated with lithographs based on his templates: "Picturesque views from the Orient" and "Genre pictures from the Orient".

Heinrich von Mayr built a kiosk from the ethnographic objects he had brought with him from his trip to the Orient , which King Wilhelm I of Württemberg bought .

From a visit to St. Petersburg , he brought objects of Siberian and Kamchadal folk art, which enriched the collections of the nobility.

Heinrich von Mayr also dealt with ceramics, inventing a clay that did not deform when fired.

His older brother, the painter Christian Friedrich von Mayr (1803-1851) emigrated to the United States .
