Heinrich Hartwig Loki von Stietencron (born June 18, 1933 in Ronco sopra Ascona ; † January 12, 2018 in Tübingen ) was a German Indologist .

Life

Heinrich von Stietencron came from the noble family Stietencron . From 1957 to 1965 he studied Indology, Ancient Iranian Studies and Philosophy at the University of Munich and at the London School of Oriental and African Studies . After receiving his doctorate in 1966, he became Hermann Berger's assistant at the Heidelberg South Asia Institute . 1970-1976 he worked in a research project on the Jagannath cult in Orissa . From 1973 to 1998 he was full professor for Indology and Comparative Religious Studies at the University of Tübingen . 1999–2005 he was head of a DFG project on temples in Orissa.

Heinrich von Stietencron had been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 1998 . In 2004 he received the " Padma Shri " award from the President of India , and in 2015 he received the Distinguished Indologist Award from the Indian government .
