history

The castle was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century as a hilltop castle and served to secure a traffic route leading from Thuringia to Quedlinburg as well as the mines and huts in the vicinity. It was probably founded by Heinrich von Gatersleben , who probably also gave it its name. A first documentary mention is known from the year 1290. Other information cites the Counts of Morungen as the builder and the year 1269 as the time of the first documentary mention. The castle was a Stolberg fief from 1307 . In 1333 it went to a sideline of the Stolberg Counts, but sank to a robber baron's castle . Travelers and traders were robbed at established roadblocks. In 1344 it was destroyed by the North Thuringian Association of Cities . The robbers were judged and some of the looted property was seized. After a reconstruction by Count Hohenstein around 1381, it was destroyed again around 1502 and then fell into disrepair. Further details name the Counts of Stolberg as the owner for the period from 1377 and a Count Heinrich as the feudal lord for 1381. In 1576 the castle was pledged to the princes of Anhalt. In a mention from 1784 it is referred to as a ruin. In the same year, Prince Albrecht von Anhalt-Bernburg had a hunting lodge built in the area, but no information is available about its continued existence.

Today only small ruinous remains of the originally extensive castle complex are preserved. Parts of the core castle with upper and lower castle can still be seen. There are also remnants of the applied on a square plan the keep and southwest of it remains of walls of a rectangular residential building. There are also parts of the wall and ditch system . The facility covers a total area of 65 by 175 meters, the area of the core castle about 20 by 20 meters. In the vicinity of the castle, various fragments from spearheads, bullets and spears were found, which refer to fighting in the vicinity of the castle.
