Heinz Deckert

Heinz Deckert (born February 20, 1927 in Langewiesen , Thuringia ; † November 11, 2008 in Berlin ) was a German trade unionist . He was chairman of the central board of the industrial union (IG) printing and paper in the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) as well as president of the standing committee of the trade unions of the graphic industry in the world trade union federation (WGB).

Life

Deckert, son of a working-class family, attended elementary school and completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter . Then he worked in the profession. In 1944/45 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service , later for military service in the Wehrmacht . Between April and June 1945 he was a US prisoner of war .

After his release he worked as a construction worker and as a typesetter in Ilmenau until 1948 , where Deckert began his union involvement as a youth shop steward, works council member, chairman of the works union management and chairman of the local executive committee. In 1946 he joined the Free German Youth . In 1948 and 1951 Deckert attended courses at the FDGB state and district school. In 1951 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany .

In 1950 he acted as secretary of the district executive boards of IG Druck und Papier in Weimar and Gera , and from 1950 to 1952 he was chairman of the regional executive committee of IG Druck und Papier Thuringia . After the dissolution of the states in the GDR, he was head of department in the central board of the IG Druck und Papier in 1952/53. From 1953 to 1958 he acted as chairman of the Gera district board of IG Druck und Papier. From 1958 to 1966 he was secretary and head of department, from 1959 deputy chairman of the IG Druck und Papier.

From 1961 to 1964 he studied at the party college at the Central Committee of the CPSU in Moscow . He completed his studies with a degree in social science. From 1964 to 1966 he worked again as deputy chairman of the central board of IG printing and paper, from January 1966 to March 1985 then as chairman of the central board of IG printing and paper. From 1966 to 1985 he was a member of the presidium of the FDGB federal executive committee.

From 1970 to 1986 Deckert was also honorary president of the Standing Committee of the trade unions of the graphic industry in the WGB, founded in Leipzig in 1961. Deckert was committed to establishing and expanding relations with trade unions in capitalist countries and the Third World. Together with Leonhard Mahlein , the chairman of the Federal German IG Druck und Papier and president of the International Graphic Federation (IGF), Deckert took advantage of opportunities for union cooperation on an international level.

Deckert died after a long illness at the age of 81.
