Heinz Engels (born August 8, 1942 in Düsseldorf ; † December 7, 2007 ) was a German theater director and theater director .

Live and act

From 1962 to 1966, Engels was assistant director at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and intern at the Royal Shakespeare Company in London and Stratford-upon-Avon . From 1966 to 1972 he worked as a freelance director in Düsseldorf , Amsterdam , Basel , Hamburg and New York . From 1972 to 1976 he was senior director at the Braunschweig State Theater , after which he was again a freelance director.

In 1986 Engels was appointed director of the German Theater in Göttingen as the successor to Günther Fleckenstein . Before that he had made himself known to the Göttingen audience with several productions.

Under his directorship, the world premiere of Der Wechsler by Gert Heidenreich took place in 1992 . He promoted children's and youth theater and maintained relationships with the Thorn theater and the Moscow Academic Art Theater (MChAT). In 1998 he had to give up his post due to illness.
