Oscar Hijuelos

Oscar Hijuelos (born August 24, 1951 in New York City , † October 12, 2013 ) was an American writer who was the first Hispanic to receive the Pulitzer Prize for novels in 1990 for his book The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love .

biography

After attending school, the son of Cuban immigrants studied at the City University of New York and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and 1976 with a Master of Arts (MA).

In 1983 he made his novel debut with Our House in the Last World . He received the Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love , published in 1989 . This book was also made into a film by director Arne Glimcher in 1992 under the title The Mambo Kings with Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas in the leading roles .

Hijuelos, who is also a scholarship of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) was later published several more novels as The Fourteen Sisters of Emilio Montez O'Brien (1993), Mr. Ives' Christmas (1995), Empress of the Splendid Season (1999) and A Simple Habana Melody (2002).

While he previously wrote books for adults, Runaway was his first book for teenagers . Most recently, Beautiful Maria of my Soul was published in 2010 and the autobiographical work Thoughts Without Cigarettes in 2011 .

In 2011, Hijuelos was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
