Heinz Gaube

Heinz Gaube (* 8. September 1940 in Bohemian Leipa ) is a university professor in retirement for Iran customer at the Oriental Institute of the University of Tübingen .

Life

After completing school in Beuna near Halle , Gaube completed an apprenticeship as an optician in Schillingsfürst ( Franconia ) and ran an optician's shop there for several years. From 1965 Gaube studied Islamic studies , Iranian studies , Semitic studies , art history , classical archeology and theology in Hamburg, Vienna, Leningrad, Beirut and London. After receiving his doctorate in Hamburg in 1970, he was employed at the Orient Institute of the German Oriental Society in Beirut until 1975 . In 1976 he completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt / Main .

His appointment to the professorship for Iranian studies at the University of Tübingen in 1978 was preceded by a visiting professorship at New York University (1977). In 1981 Gaube taught as a professor for "History, Theory and Critique of Islamic Architecture and Urbanism" at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA.

As a professor in Tübingen, Gaube was involved in teaching at the DFG Collaborative Research Center 19 " Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East " (from 1982) and initiated the Research Center for Islamic Numismatics and the "Research Center for the Economic and Corporate History of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East "(CEBHEM - Center for the Economic and Business History of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East ).

Gaube carried out numerous field research. So from 1968 to 1974 in southwest Iran and in Lebanon on rural architecture, in Syria on late antiquity , on early Islam and Arabic epigraphy and in the Iranian city of Isfahan . After 1975, Gaube conducted research in Iranian cities and the regions of Sistan and Makran , carried out urban research in the Afghan city of Herat , examined the genesis and form of rural settlements in Yemen , the city of Taif in Saudi Arabia, carried out a survey south of Amman (Jordan) and was significantly involved in the empirically based development of a renovation concept for the old town of Aleppo in Syria.

Gaube is the founder of the association "Friends of the Old Town of Aleppo" based in Stuttgart, which uses its funds in selective renovation measures, works as a project consultant on renovation concepts for the old town of Homs , conducts construction research on Islamic grave structures in Pakistan, and deals with archaeological and Settlement issues in the Uzbek cities of Khiva and Bukhara as well as oasis settlements in Oman.
