Heinz Gess (born January 7, 1945 in Marl ) is a German sociologist and publisher of the social science online journal Critique Network - Journal for Critical Theory of Society .

Life

Heinz Gess - coming from a family of miners - studied sociology, economics and social psychology at the Universities of Münster and Bielefeld. In 1977 he received his doctorate in Bielefeld on the subject of the changeability (falsifiability) of subjective systems - a contribution to the theory of cognitive consistency (reviewers: Joachim Matthes , Günter Albrecht , Niklas Luhmann ). From 1978 to 2010 Gess was professor of sociology at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences .

In addition to his teaching and research activities, Gess repeatedly attracted greater attention through political interventions, which were primarily related to the online journal Critique Network , which he has published since 2005 . In 2008 the national press ( taz , Jungle World , Die Zeit ) reported on the unsuccessful attempt by the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences to use disciplinary proceedings to prevent him from criticizing the university's approving attitude towards the former lecturer and National Socialist Werner Georg Haverbeck . In 2010 Gess was temporarily placed under police protection after the President of the Islamic Religious Community in Berlin , Abdurrahim Vural, called in a public press conference for the publisher of the criticism network to be severely punished . The appeal was preceded by the publication of articles critical of Islamism in the Critique Network .

research

Gess was initially strongly influenced by the philosophy of science and critical rationalism . In this phase, his focus on "sociology of deviant behavior and social control" and "extracurricular socialization" was primarily based on sociological action theory ( Max Weber , Alfred Schütz , Robert K. Merton ) and the theory of symbolic interaction ( George Herbert Mead ) .

From 1985 he turned away from critical rationalism and made the critical theory of society following Theodor W. Adorno , Max Horkheimer , Herbert Marcuse , Leo Löwenthal as well as the associated "Critique of Political Economy" ( Karl Marx ) and critically applied psychoanalysis the focus of his teaching and research. Since this reorientation, his research topics have been: ideology and religion criticism, criticism of fashionable psychologies and therapeutic practices,  anti-Semitism research and criticism, neo-fascism, criticism of the modern capitalist mode of production.
