biography

Pfeiffer began to be interested in geology early on. In 1939 he became the youngest member of the Thuringian Geological Association and gave a lecture on the sub- ordovician phycode layers . In 1940 he was called up for military service and returned from captivity in 1946 to work in his parents' business.

In 1950 he was appointed geologist in the Thuringian slate industry . In 1960 he passed the external examination at the Bergakademie Freiberg as a qualified geologist. He wrote his diploma thesis in 1954 on the planks near Saalfeld. This work earned him the nickname "Bohlenpfeiffer".

In 1964 he received his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. with Kurd von Bülow in Rostock . In the same year he was appointed to the Central Geological Institute in Berlin. Pfeiffer was one of the last generalists, not only the superficial geological problems of Devon / carbon - stratigraphy worked, but the mining history of the Thuringian Slate Mountains created fundamental work.

He was also active in the field of paleontology and several extinct taxa bear his name, such as the species Gattenpleura pfeifferi and Diacoryphe pfeifferi , both from the basal Lower Devonian. His entomological studies and his writing activities are less well known. Pfeiffer left 147 publications.

In 1994 he became an honorary member of the Thuringian Geological Association.
