Life

Theuerjahr began training as a farmer, but because of his artistic talent he was able to study at the State University for Art Education in Berlin.

In 1939 he made the decision to make the then very remote Waldhäuser settlement his domicile. From 1940 he lived in the artist village of Waldhäuser in the Bavarian Forest. He started as a painter and draftsman, but soon he devoted himself primarily to sculpture.

Shortly after the Second World War, his first exhibition was on view in Munich, which eventually earned him membership of the Neue Münchner Kunstgenossenschaft. At the same time, Theuerjahr was a member of the Danube Forest Group from the start . In 1960 he made his first trip to Africa. These and other trips to Africa had a significant impact on his artistic work.

A large part of his sculptural work consists of figurative animal sculptures, many of which are in public ownership.

The quintessence of his work is aimed at the deeper understanding and representation of the creature's appearance: at the center of his extensive work is the representation of the animal. Even during his art studies at the State University for Art Education in Berlin, he found "his place from the first day of creation" on his long hikes through the Bavarian Forest in 1935. In 1940 he moved to Waldhäuser, a small village at the foot of the Lusens in his studio house. In 1942 he married Zenzi cabinet. In his self-chosen solitude, he created an important work with a strong concentration that has the aura and soul of the creature as its content. To do this, he had to leave for the African continent fourteen times to find out about the animal world and the archaic forms of Egypt to his statement of the great simple form.

"Heinz Theuerjahr's Ark" sculpture park

The atelier in Waldhäuser is an authentic place for an important artist and his work. The Freundeskreis Heinz Theuerjahr e. V., founded in 1993, obliged by the association's statutes, and borne by the affection for Heinz Theuerjahr, has leased the guest house on the Theuerjahr property and turned it into a memorial. With the help of the municipality of Neuschönau and the generous support of Sparkasse Grafenau, the property in particular was redesigned into a freely accessible sculpture park, which, on the one hand, enables the visitor to see the beauty of the landscape with an incomparable view, and on the other hand, provides an insight into a sculptural work of unimagined dimensions.

The works were made available by the Theuerjahr family.
