Hejnał players in Krakow

Hejnał is a Polish signal of triumph that is usually played with a trumpet or a carillon from a tower (town hall, church, etc.). Today it is seen more as traditional cultural heritage and is sometimes played every day at the same time, mostly from the town hall.

Some Hejnałs have developed into entire songs and lyrics over the years.

history

The Krakow Hejnał Mariacki is also the Broken warning call ( Przerwany Hejnał called). It was played in the Middle Ages at dawn and dusk to announce the opening and closing of the city gates. It has been performed regularly since 1810, every hour in the four directions, and since 1927 it has also been broadcast on the radio at lunchtime. In the 20th century, historical facts (e.g. battle of Wahlstatt in April 1241), legends and the children's book by the American Eric P. Kelly, published in 1928, merged into the legend, first mentioned in travel guides in 1935, that the signal broke off because of the Tatar attack by In 1241 the trumpeter was hit by an arrow. Now, in his honor, the Hejnał is only played up to the note that the trumpet player was the last to play before his death.
