Helberhausen is a district of Hilchenbach in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The place is in the Rothaargebirge on Ferndorfbach east of Hilchenbach.

history

Helberhausen was first mentioned in a document in 1319 as Hartlevus de Helmerinchusin . There used to be a chapel school in the village.

In the 17th century, herdsmen began to carve spoons out of maple wood . It was made over a million times, exported to Holland and even the West Indies . Today one would say that this household appliance became an export hit. The spoon carvers switched from maple to birch wood in the 19th century because the maple wood they needed was no longer available. However, birch wood did not last that long and quickly turned gray and unsightly. Around 1920 the industry in the village died out.

Until the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1969, the place belonged to the Keppel office . As the successor to the chapel school, there was a primary school in the village, which was closed in 2009.
