Helene Stökl

Helene Stökl ( pseudonyms : Constanze von Franken , Joconde ; born March 18, 1845 in Brandenburg an der Havel as Helene Boeckel ; † February 15, 1929 in Vienna ) was a German writer .

Life

Helene Stökl was the daughter of Karl Boeckel, a language teacher at the Knight Academy in Brandenburg Cathedral ; her sister was the writer Elise Linhart . Helene Stökl grew up in Brandenburg and Breslau .

She completed training as a teacher in Görlitz and passed her teacher exams in Bunzlau in 1863 . She then worked as a teacher in Saxony and in Wiener Neustadt . In 1869 she married the music teacher Rudolf Stökl ; the marriage had three children.

After the death of her husband in 1885, Helene Stökl lived with her eldest son, Pastor Erich Stökl, in Steyr from 1896 , in St. Pölten from 1901 and in Vienna from 1905 . From 1873 she wrote articles for Austrian newspapers and magazines , and from 1877 she published her own books.

Helene Stökl was the author of narrative works , mainly for children and young people . Many of her works can be assigned to the " Backfischliteratur ". She also wrote guides and etiquette books under the pseudonym Constanze von Franken . Her greatest success was the work Catechism of Good Tone and Fine Customs, first published in 1890 (later: Handbook of Good Tone and Fine Customs ), which appeared in 66 editions by 1933 and of which more than 300,000 copies were sold. In 1890, Helene Stökl was given an honorary gift from the Schwestern Fröhlich Foundation .
