history

Monastery, main entrance

In 1894, the diocese of Trier received the monastery that already existed at that time from the Eduard Puricelli Foundation . In 1898 it became an orphan boarding school, where the boys had the opportunity to work in crafts such as tailors, shoemakers and carpenters. Since then there has also been a vocational school in the boarding school.

In 1925 the Salesians of Don Bosco took over the Edward Foundation. The arrival of the Salesians brought many changes with it, because they not only attached importance to work and a good professional and school education, but also to meaningful and imaginative organization of their leisure time. They initiated activities in the musical, artistic and sporting fields, which was a completely new experience for most of the boys.

During the Second World War , the boarding school was relocated to Mayen and the monastery served as a hospital. The building was originally supposed to be demolished after the war, but this could be prevented by the efforts of the Salesians.

In 1952 extensive renovation work took place in the workshops and dormitories.

In 1969 the young people were able to move into modern group houses to the west of the B 51.

In 1972 new workshops for electrical, metal and painting were opened.

1978 saw the expansion of the sports and leisure offer with a sports hall.

Two decisive events in the recent history of the Helenenberg were the two major fires in 1980 and 1983. In the first fire, a major part of the main building was severely damaged, the second fire in the carpentry's paint shop. But these disasters were used as an opportunity to rebuild and renew.

In 1984 the newly renovated rooms of the vocational school were inaugurated.

On August 1, 1999, the special school for the behaviorally handicapped (special school for educational aid) started operations and was named "Valdocco School" in memory of the first school under the direction of Don Bosco.

The Pinardi Group was created in 1998; this was designed for juvenile sex offenders. In practice there was a differentiated need and so in 1999 the Turin group for juvenile sex offenders with poor cognitive performance was created.

Residential groups on the grounds of the monastery

The groups on the grounds of the Helenenberg youth welfare center combine the advantages of the central availability of all offers of the facility (training, school and leisure offers) with the individual possibilities of decentralized living units / groups.
