Helga Kross

Helga Kross (to 1954 Helga Roos , born September 29 . Jul / 12. October  1917 greg. In Tallinn , † 7. November 1998 ibid) was an Estonian translator .

life and work

Helga Kross graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1936 and studied German and English philology at the University of Tartu from 1936 to 1942 . 1943–1944 she worked as a German teacher in Tallinn, in 1945 she was briefly employed at the History Museum before she was arrested by the NKVD in the summer of the same year . After her conviction, she was in a camp in Sverdlovsk Oblast until 1950 , after which she lived as an exile in the Krasnoyarsk Territory . Here she met Jaan Kross , who was also exiled and married in 1954, before they returned to Estonia together.

After returning to Tallinn in the summer of 1954, she was at home for a few years and worked from 1961 to 1978 as a bibliographer in the Kreutzwald State Library in Tallinn. She then worked as a freelance translator. Helga Kross had been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1990 . The Estonian linguist and translator Kristiina Ross is her daughter.
