Heliconia longa is a species ofthe Heliconia family (Heliconiaceae). It is native from Central America to northern South America.

description

Heliconia longa is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant , vegetatively similar to a banana plant and with a height of 5 to 7 meters. Each rung can be found four to seven green above, white waxy powdered leaves , each of which longest is up to 300 centimeters long and 55 centimeters wide.

The up to 160 centimeters long inflorescences hanging down, the inflorescence can be found twelve to forty mostly two lines to approximately two lines, but occasionally spirally arranged bracts .

Each coil consists of 10 to 20 flowers , the inflorescence is white to yellow at the base, strongly yellow towards the extreme end and completely bald to slightly fluffy hairy at the extreme end.

Heliconia longa is native from Nicaragua to Ecuador.

Systematics and botanical history

The species was first described in 1904 by Robert Fiske Griggs as Bihai longa and placed in the Heliconia in 1930 by Hubert JP Winkler .
