Heliconia pogonantha is a species ofthe Heliconia family (Heliconiaceae). It is native from Central America to northern South America.

description

Heliconia pogonantha is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant , vegetatively similar to a banana plant and with a height of 4 to 7.5 meters. Each rung found three to six unterseits often gray-green leaves . The longest leaf per shoot is 120 to 330 centimeters long and 40 to 65 centimeters wide.

The up to 160 centimeters long inflorescences are suspended, the inflorescence can be found typically arranged spirally from 20 to 55 bracts , the middle is red on the outside (to the rachis out occasionally yellow) and bare hairy to silky.

Each coil consists of 10 to 30 flowers , the flower envelope is yellow and bare, but is slightly covered with gold-colored, silky hair towards the extreme end.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 for both Heliconia pogonantha var. Holerythra and Heliconia pogonantha var. Veraguasensis .

Heliconia pogonantha is widespread from Honduras to Colombia.

Systematics and botanical history

The species was first described by Georg Cufodontis in 1933 .

One can distinguish four varieties:

  • Heliconia pogonantha var. Holerythra G.S.Daniels & FGStiles : It occurs in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia.
  • Heliconia pogonantha var. Pogonantha : It occurs in Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
  • Heliconia pogonantha var. Pubescens G.S.Daniels & FGStiles : It occurs in Costa Rica.
  • Heliconia pogonantha var. Veraguasensis W.J. Kress : It occurs in Panama.
