The Hellbach is a left tributary of the Kempt almost three kilometers long . The brook rises as Wöschbach in the southernmost part of the municipality of Brütten and bears the name Hellbach from the confluence with the Birchbach. As such, it flows almost along its entire length on the municipal boundary between Winterthur and Lindau .

etymology

The name Hellbach is derived from the medieval Hell for Hell. The name indicates that the brook is remote and in a steep area south of Brütten that is difficult to access. The forest area (Hellholz) bordering to the north also bears a corresponding name and the vineyard parcel formerly located there also bore the name Hellreben.

geography

course

The Hellbach rises in the extreme south of the Brüttener municipality. Its source is overturned under the Rüeswisen a little south of the Zelgli district and only a little west of the source of the Middle Hellbach . Since an amelioration in the 1970s, the upper course has served as a drainage line. It collects part of the water from the agricultural areas of Rüeswiesen and Ifang . Immediately after Zürcherstrasse , the stream comes to the surface after around 700 meters in the Ifang forest area and is named Wöschbach.

After around 200 meters, the brook takes on the Buechmesbächli from the courtyard of the same name on the right and after another 130 meters the Ifangbächli. After 580 meters, the brook crosses the municipal boundary to Lindau on Brüttenerstrasse .

Around 1250 meters after the source, the Wöschbach joins the Birchbach on the right-hand side and now bears the name Hellbach. The tributaries of the Birchbach arise in the municipality of Lindau, whereby the stream and its tributaries are partly overturned in the agricultural area. After the confluence of the Wöschbach and Birchbach rivers, the brook takes on the Mittleren Hellbach on the left after about 220 meters and flows from there on the municipal boundary between Winterthur and Lindau. On this route, after a further 360 meters, it takes up the Birchrainbächli on the right and another 100 meters later as the last inflow on the left, the Äusseren Hellbach. The Hellbach then continues to flow between the two forest areas of Hellholz and Birchrain to the Kempt. The last 185 meters, after the municipal boundary leaves the river when reaching the Geilikerwiesen corridor, the river still flows completely into Winterthur's municipal area. The Hellbach flows opposite the Kemptweiher at an altitude of 438  m above sea level. M. in the Kempt.
