The light blue Mormon tulip ( Calochortus coeruleus ) is a species of the genus Mormon tulips ( Calochortus ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).
features
The light blue Mormon tulip is an autumn to spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 3 to 20 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The basal leaves are preserved at flowering time.
One to ten flowers stand in a racemose inflorescence . The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry , threefold flower is open and bell-shaped. The bracts are not noticeably striped or spotted. The inner ones are 8 to 12 millimeters long, strongly ciliate on the entire edge, hairy on the upper side only over the gland, obovate, pointed and light blue. The capsule fruit is nodding.
The flowering time is in June, sometimes it begins as early as May.
Occurrence
The light blue Mormon tulip occurs in northern California in forest clearings on gravel at altitudes of 600 to 2500 meters.
