Helmut Brand (born July 28, 1957 in Herford ) is a German physician and professor of European health sciences at Maastricht University .

Life path

After graduating from high school in Herford, Helmut Brand studied human medicine from 1978 to 1984 at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and the University of Zurich . In Düsseldorf he joined the Corps Marchia Brno at the beginning of his studies . In 1984 he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. Between 1985 and 1990 he continued his education in the fields of internal medicine , surgery and psychiatry . In the meantime, he obtained a Master of Science in Community Medicine ( MSc ) from 1987 to 1988 at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the Medical Faculty of the University of London .

From 1988 to 1993 Helmut Brand in was health department Minden-Lübbecke on social medicine and health sector. In 1990, he led a pilot study by the Health Ministry of the country Lower Saxony for the Cancer Registry of Lower Saxony. From 1993 to 1995 he was in the Senate Authority for Labor, Health and Social Affairs of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, responsible for the analysis of health systems, the cancer register, reporting in the health system and medical statistics. In 1995 he was appointed director of the State Institute for the Public Health Service of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1996 he received the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Medicine of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (DLSHTM), in 1998 he became a member of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine (MFPHM). From 2007 to 2008 he was also the managing director of the Epidemiological Cancer Register in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2008 he was appointed scientific director of the State Institute for Health and Labor of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was created on January 1, 2008 by amalgamating the previous State Institute for the Public Health Service of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the previous State Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Helmut Brand had already carried out various teaching activities since 1989, for example since 1989 at Bielefeld University on epidemiology and health system research, since 1990 on social medicine at the Academy for Public Health, and since 1995 European health policy at various European universities and summer schools. Helmut Brand has been Professor of European Health Sciences at Maastricht University since September 2008.

• From 1996 to 2003 Helmut Brand was managing director of the European Public Health Center NRW (EPHZ), since 2004 deputy chairman of the board of the EPHZ.
• From 2001 to 2007 he was deputy chairman of the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP), then a board member of the DGSMP.
• Since 2002 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the European Public Health Association (EUPHA).
• Brand has been a member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) since 2008 .

In the European Union

• Helmut Brand has been a consultant to the European Commission for Public Health and Social Medicine since 1994 . 
• Since 1995 he has participated in projects of the Public Health Program of the European Union.
• Since 2006 he has headed the Health System Working Party project of the Public Health Program .

In other international collaborations

• Helmut Brand has been working with the WHO in Copenhagen since 1995 in various networks such as the Regions for Health Network (RHN), the Health Evidence Network (HEN) or the Collaborating Center for Regional Health Policy and Public Health .
• Since 2006 he has been cooperating with the National Public Health Institute Tokyo in Japan.
