Helmut Frisch

Helmut Frisch (born October 1, 1936 in Vienna , † July 8, 2006 in Monteriggioni , Province of Siena in Italy) was an Austrian economist , lawyer and chairman of the National Debt Committee .

Life

Helmut Frisch studied law and political science in Graz from 1954 to 1960 before working as an assistant at the Institute for Advanced Studies . In 1970 he became a university professor in Linz and a year later a university professor at the Technical University of Vienna . In Vienna he was also full professor of economics .

At Österreichische Postsparkasse , Frisch was Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1978 to 1997, and after its conversion into a stock corporation, Chairman of the Supervisory Board until 2000. He was also a member of the Supervisory Board of Austrian Lotteries and the Austrian Federal Finance Agency .

As a financial expert and lawyer, he earned international recognition. His research has taken him to visiting professorships in Florence (European University), New York (Columbia University) and Los Angeles (University of California). Since 1978 he has headed the Austrian National Debt Committee and in this capacity published the national debt report annually. As a budget expert, he had repeatedly criticized the financial policy in Austria. He also made a name for himself as an author of specialist publications.

He was traded as the successor to Finance Minister Ferdinand Lacina in 1995 , but he turned down this position.

On July 8, 2006, at the age of 69, he died of a heart attack during a convention near Siena.
