Helmut Hampe (born November 19, 1896 in Leipzig , † August 22, 1939 in Braunschweig ) was a German music teacher and ornithologist .

Life

Helmut Hampe was the oldest child of the neurologist Julius Hampe and his wife Emma, ​​born in Braunschweig, born. Cramm. Shortly after his birth, he moved with his parents to Braunschweig, his father's hometown, where he attended Wilhelm-Gymnasium from 1907 . He took part in the First World War on the Eastern and Western Fronts as a volunteer from 1914 and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. He was seriously injured in a lung shot. Hampe began studying medicine in Gießen in 1919 . This was followed by music studies at the Sondershausen Conservatory . He was unable to finish both courses for health reasons. In 1924 he passed the music teacher examination at the Braunschweig Conservatory. He gave violin and piano lessons until 1930. Hampe died in 1939 as a result of being injured in the war. The Braunschweig ornithologist Rudolf Berndt published an obituary in 1940 in the Journal for Ornithology .

Ornithological research

Hampe first published in 1914 in the Braunschweiger Jugendkalender and in the Allgemeine Tierschutz-Zeitschrift . He was particularly interested in keeping birds, which he devoted himself to after returning from the war. At first out of a hobby, then to scientific research, Hampe wrote over 150 articles on the topics of bird care, breeding, breeding biology, sociology and systematics. His work, which he illustrated with his own professional photographs, has appeared in the journals Gefiederte Welt , Vögel Ferner Land , Avicultural Magazine , The Foreigner , Ornithological Monthly Reports and in the Journal für Ornithologie . Since 1927 Hampe was a member of the German Ornithological Society .
