Helmut König (pedagogue)

Helmut König (born November 20, 1920 in Nowawes ; † May 17, 2005 in Birkenwerder ) was a German educational scientist and educational historian in the GDR .

Life

After his military service, König studied at the University of Jena and won a prize for a thesis on German school laws, which was recognized as a dissertation in 1948. He then did his internship at the Free School Community of Wickersdorf from 1948 to 1950, where the reform pedagogue Gustav Wyneken (1875-1963) founded a school. From 1950 he studied pedagogy with Robert Alt in Berlin , whereupon he qualified as a professor in 1954. As early as 1956 he became professor for the history of education at the Pedagogical Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin , of which he was dean from 1965 to 1968. Because of his achievements, he was appointed chairman of the Scientific Council of the Ministry for Popular Education of the GDR . In 1969 he was the first director of the Pedagogy Section. With the founding of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR (APW) in 1970, he headed the "Department for the History of Education" there until his early retirement due to invalidity in 1981.

His historical work shaped the maintenance of tradition in education in the GDR to the end. His work on the history of national education in Germany and on Friedrich Froebel is still recognized today. He published Fröbel's “Mutter-, Spiel- und Koselieder” in 1984, inspired by the wealth of Fröbel's estate in Berlin. One of his last published works was the edition of the letter: “My dear Mr. Froebel! Letters from women and virgins to the friend of children and people ”.
