Helmut Keppler (born November 8, 1924 in Erlangen ; † March 9, 2019 in Gerlingen ) was a German artist , painter and graphic artist who can be assigned to constructivism .

Life

Keppler grew up as the youngest of four siblings in a Catholic home in Stuttgart . His father was a freelance architect and brought him into contact with Art Nouveau at an early age . After finishing school in 1939, Keppler began his training at the Reisacher repro company in Stuttgart, where he learned the basics of the graphic trade: from chemical graphics to reproduction photography, lithography and offset technology to printing technology and hand typesetting. In 1942, Keppler finished his professional training and in the same year received the position order for the Reich Labor Service , whereupon he was recalled to serve in the Wehrmacht in 1943 . In the Wehrmacht he completed basic training as a newsman. Released from French captivity, he returned to Stuttgart in 1948 and began studying graphics at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Gerhard Gollwitzer's drawing class . The focus of his studies was on font design, typography, posters and logos. He was strongly influenced by the " Stuttgart School " and the professors Eugen Funk and Walter Brudi . In spring 1950, Anton Stankowski recruited Keppler as a student assistant for his studio in Stuttgart. At Stankowski, Keppler learned the practical work that had a lasting impact on him. Stankowki's design criteria, which were an interplay between design and art, were the guiding principles for Keppler's work throughout his life. In 1952 he finished his studies at the Stuttgart Art Academy, after which he worked for another two years in Anton Stankowski's studio. In 1954 Keppler left the studio and since then has worked as a freelance artist, painter and graphic artist.

Helmut Keppler dealt intensively with design at home . His father was an architect who in the time of the New Objectivity , the International Style, committed himself vehemently to Art Nouveau. Keppler suffered from the rigorous persistence of his father and turned intensely to modernity, which led him to constructivism. His early works are already based on the basic elements of points, lines, surfaces, circles, squares and triangles. Keppler's constructivism is inspired by nature and is always on the lookout for laws. The common thread is the conscious, targeted design that runs through the entire work. He is interested in the structure, movement and sequence of geometric elements. For Keppler this is the structure of the structure, the structure, the division of a whole, the parts of which are spatially, formally or mentally related to one another. Movement means changing the static order, triggering activity and creating tension.
