Eugen Funk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eugen Funk (born May 17, 1911 in Stuttgart ; † January 11, 2004 there ) was a German artist, professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , graphic designer and typographer .

Life

Eugen Funk graduated from the Württ. Staatl. School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart from 1930 to 1934 under Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler . He was a soldier in World War II. In 1935 he came to prominence as a commercial artist and book independently . From 1937 to 1945, Funk was the studio manager of Union-Druckerei Stuttgart, where he designed the cultural magazine “Standpunkt” (co-founder Hans Weitpert ) as the first illustrated magazine after the war.

In 1949, at the same time as Walter Brudi , he was appointed to succeed Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler's chair as artistic teacher and head of the class for advertising graphics and writing at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . He was appointed professor in 1950 and retired in 1976. While teaching, Eugen Funk made regular trips and excursions with his students to Holland, Spain, Italy and Yugoslavia; preferred places of inspiration were the Italian Dolomites and the Italian Riviera , especially Marina di Massa . He mainly conveyed graphic and photographic techniques as well as advertising content.

However, only a small group of people knew that Eugen Funk also devoted himself to painting and drawing. He died in January 2004 and left behind a large number of drawings, paintings and calligraphy. His creative and experimental work in the field of photography ( isohelias , solarizations and technical applications), which had a strong influence on his students and commercial graphics, was only preserved in a few examples.

Funk wanted little to do with the usual art scene. He rarely gave his approval for exhibitions. He didn't sell any pictures, he just gave away a few. After his death, his estate was extensively digitized using photographs. Since the beginning of 2011, some of his works have also been documented in a printed catalog in extracts by subject matter.

Eugen Funk is a representative of the so-called Stuttgart School .

His main students include:

Honorary member of the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and honorary member of Interart-Galerie Stuttgart, Union of Freelance Artists and Friends of Art Stuttgart.
