Helmut Klabunde

Helmut Klabunde (born January 8, 1935 in Zarnekow , Western Pomerania ) is a former officer of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic . Most recently he held the rank of major general in the reserve .

Life

As the son of a milker, Klabunde learned the job of a wheelwright after attending school for twelve years from 1950 to 1955 . On May 31, 1955, he joined the Barracked People's Police , the forerunner of the NVA, and was trained as a non-commissioned officer there until 1958. He then became a group and platoon leader in the Pioneer Battalion 8 . In 1957 he joined the SED . From 1958 to 1960 Klabunde was FDJ secretary in the same battalion. In 1960 he was an FDJ student and then from 1961 to 1967 senior instructor for youth work in the main political administration of the Ministry for National Defense (MfNV) in Berlin . Following this, Klabunde attended the NVA military academy in Dresden from 1967 to 1970 as an officer auditor and then returned to his previous position in the MfNV until 1975. From 1975 to 1981 he was department head for youth in the political headquarters of the MfNV and from June 1976 to June 1981 a member of the office of the Central Council of the FDJ. In 1980 he was promoted to colonel. On May 26, 1981, he was elected to succeed Horst Glaeser as chairman of the civil workers' union of the NVA and on May 31, 1981 he was transferred to the reserve . In September 1981 he was co-opted into the FDGB federal executive committee. On October 7, 1988 he was appointed major general by the chairman of the GDR's National Defense Council , Erich Honecker . He held the trade union office until his resignation on March 7, 1990.
