Helmut Johannes Eduard Kristen (born December 31, 1929 in Uetersen ; † February 18, 2012 ) was a German chemist and professor of organic chemistry at the University of Rostock .

Life

Helmut Kristen was born as the son of the papermaker Josef Kristen (1903-1993) and his wife Magarete, b. Rüter (1907–1988) born. His wife was Angelika (née Korpus), whom he married in 1953 and who died on January 19, 1978. He attended the local elementary school from 1936 to 1940 and from 1940 to 1947 with a short break at the local secondary school , where he also passed the secondary school leaving certificate. In 1947 Kristen began an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant at Nordmarkwerke Uetersen, which he successfully completed in 1949. After a short time as a chemical laboratory assistant , he was at the workers and farmers faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he passed the university entrance qualification in 1952 . In the same year Helmut Kristen began studying chemistry at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , which he held until 1955, when he finished his studies at the University of Rostock in 1958 as a graduate chemist. Until 1962 he was a research assistant at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the University of Rostock and doctorate Dr. rer. nat. From 1964 to 1968 Helmut Kristen was a senior assistant at the Institute for Animal Nutrition and Agricultural Chemistry at the University of Rostock and in 1969 did his habilitation as a Dr. rer. nat. et agr. habil. In the same year he was appointed lecturer for agricultural chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Rostock and from 1974 Associate Professor at the University of Rostock. After two years Kristen became Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Rostock and Deputy Section Director for Research in the Chemistry Section of the University of Rostock. In 1978, as head of the synthetic chemistry science department in the chemistry section, Helmut Kristen was appointed director of the chemistry section at the University of Rostock in 1983 and retired in 1993.

Helmut Kristen has been awarded the Humboldt Medal in silver.
