Helmut Metzner (plant physiologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Metzner (born September 15, 1925 in Osnabrück , † September 20, 1999 in Tübingen ) was a German plant physiologist and university professor .

Live and act

Metzner studied biology , physics and physical chemistry at the Universities of Münster and Göttingen . He completed his studies in 1950 with a dissertation on the subject of " Electrochemical measurements on non-irritated plant cells ". After a research stay in 1952 in Berkeley , California , with Melvin Calvin , he worked as an assistant at the Botanical Institute of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , where he was engaged in research on chloroplasts . After working at the University of Göttingen , he completed his habilitation there with studies on " Changes in leaf proteins during photoperiodic induction ".

In 1961, Metzner was offered a position at the University of Tübingen , where he was founding director of the Institute for Chemical Plant Physiology in 1964. His main area of research there was initially photosynthesis . In addition, since 1981 he has been committed to the establishment of the course " Ecology and its biological foundations " sponsored by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the federal government . More than 6,000 people took part in this part-time course. Ultimately, this institution led to the establishment of the European Academy for Environmental Issues in Tübingen, whose President Metzner was until his death in 1999.

Together with Hans Karl Filbinger , Günter Rohrmoser , Heinz Karst and Erich Baumann , Metzner founded the right-wing conservative study center in Weikersheim in 1979 , and was a member of its executive committee until 1995.

In 1995, Metzner organized a conference with climate deniers, after which the Leipzig Declaration was disseminated. This both disputes the scientific consensus on global warming caused by greenhouse gases and at the same time falsely asserts that satellite data would not show any global warming. In addition, the goals of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change are declared unrealistic.

In 1993, Metzner retired. He died in Tübingen in 1999.

Metzner was editor of the journal Photobiochemistry and Photophysics and co-editor of Photosynthetica .
