Helmut Redl was born on December 19, 1950 in Vienna. After graduating from school and completing military service , he began studying agriculture at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. During his studies, the university was renamed the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna in 1975. Working in his parents' small business sparked his lifelong enthusiasm for viticulture, which is why he specialized in this area. After completing his diploma studies in 1976 with his diploma thesis, attempting to pruning the Grüner Veltliner variety , he passed his Rigorosum three years later with distinction. His dissertation was entitled “ Education and cutting experiments in a wide-area system with the grape variety Grüner Veltliner” . In 1985 he received his habilitation . On February 1, 1977, he joined BOKU, where he worked as a university assistant specializing in plant protection in viticulture and fruit growing at the then Institute for Agricultural Plant Protection and Forest Phytopathology . Until his death he remained loyal to the department that was split up in later years - after that he was part of the plant protection department . He made significant contributions to the development of the department and played a key role in the development of the bachelor's degree in viticulture, oenology and wine management.

Throughout his life he wrote countless articles in specialist magazines and other media; To be mentioned here are, among others, Der Winzer , in which he has published since the 1970s, or Mitteilungen Klosterneuburg , in which he published specialist articles from at least 1980. He published further specialist articles in IAEST-Mitteilungen , Die Wein-Wissenschaft , Commercial Fruit-Growing , Die Bodenkultur , Der Pflanzenarzt , Die Österreichische Weinzeitung , Healthy Plants , VITIS , Der Deutsche Weinbau , Environmentally Appropriate Viticulture Technology (KTBL-Schrift), Der Weinbau , Besseres Obst , Phyton , Der Förderungsdienst , Contributions to Entomofaunistik , Journal of Plant Diseases and Protection , Journal of Plant Nutrition , Materials Science and Engineering C: Biomimetic and Supramolecular Systems , Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery , Tissue Engineering Part A , The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery or Journal International des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin . He also published numerous articles for scientific events and was thus often represented at the Austrian Plant Protection Days in the 1990s . In 1996 he published the third and completely revised edition of Weinbau heute (first published in 1975 by Hans Traxler and Walter Ruckenbauer ). Shortly before his death, he published the work of Burgenland's wine-growing regions and their quality potential in collaboration with other people .

During his entire teaching activity, Redl was also active in viticulture and relied on practical illustration. He achieved this primarily through close cooperation with agricultural technical schools, the viticulture advisory service and interested companies. Until recently he worked on the further expansion of a vine protection program for local needs with a focus on downy mildew , which he had developed himself.

On September 21, 2015, Redl died at the age of 64 after a serious illness; on October 2nd, 2015 he was buried in the family grave at the parish cemetery in Nussdorf .
